Regular price $5.99The Ring of Fire Map
The Ring of Fire is a term used to describe an area of frequent seismic and volcanic activity that borders the Pacific Ocean throughout its entire circumference, including Washington State. The Ring of Fire is due to subduction. Wherever the Pacific Ocean Plate converges upon a continental plate, as in North America, South America, or Asia, it subducts beneath it. Often this results in earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The Ring of Fire has produced over half of the world’s volcanic activity in recorded history and contains over 350 active volcanoes. The 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption and the 2001 Nisqually earthquake are two contemporary examples in Washington that remind all of its residents of the impact of the Ring of Fire in the region.
