Geologic Regions of Washington Map

This map describes the geologic development of Washington. Washington began one billion years ago as the edge of the North American continent. This small sliver of land was all that existed of Washington until 205 million years ago, when the Kootenay Arc became part of the state. After the Kootenay Arc,
the Okanogan Sub-Continent joined Washington, followed by the Blue Mountains and North American Sub-Continent. More recently, at least in geologic terms, the Olympic Peninsula/ Willapa Hills, the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Plateau, and Olympic Mountains all
joined Washington. The final geologic developments, the Palouse Hills, Cascade Volcanoes, and Puget Sound Lowlands were new landforms created from existing landscapes.
