This textbook discusses some past, present and future aspects of the Pacific Northwest and its inhabitants. The book is organized into four units:

Unit One - The Physical Environment;
Unit Two - Human History
Unit Three - Socio-Economic Progress
Unit Four - The Future

The scope of the book is by design regional and therefore quite broad. Discussion of events, people, and concepts is limited to the subject's overall impact upon the region as a whole. It was not designed to be a scholarly historical treatise nor a collection of local or personal histories.

The book is a regional text designed to acquaint the Pacific Northwest secondary student with his or her environment and cultural heritage.

Student Activities

Student activities conclude each chapter except Chapter 19. The student activities have four basic parts.

A. Developing Vocabulary Skills - important basic enrichment terms
B. Developing Map Skills - use and interpretation of maps
C. Understanding Concepts - student questions stressing the central ideas within the chapter
D. Enrichment Activities - more difficult questions and tasks.

The activities are designed to increase the student's depth of understanding, expand the learning experience, and challenge the student to see the Pacific Northwest's relationship with the rest of the nation and the world.

Supplementals

The book contains numerous maps, diagrams, climatographs, artist depictions, timelines, vignettes, and charts. The vignettes either add color to some human aspect or discuss a topic in greater depth. The history chapters begin with a complete chronological sequence of major events noted in the timeline. Statistical and informational charts provide instant reference for the reader without having to seek the information elsewhere. An index to the supplementals is on pages vi, vii, and viii. In all cases the most recent data available were used.

Maps

With few exceptions the maps were drawn especially for this textbook by the author. They are appropriately dispersed throughout the text. The students will appreciate the proximity of the maps to the narrative discussion of the topic. Each end-of-chapter activity includes a series of map interpretations. The maps will help the student's spatial understanding.

Ancillaries Available

The author has created a series of ancillary materials to aid the classroom instructor in deriving maximum utility from The Pacific Northwest: Past, Present and Future textbook.

The Teacher's Guide is designed to assist even the first-time instructor in creating meaningful and challenging lesson plans and achieving appropriate student learning objectives. The Guide is formatted with a brief review of chapter content and a discussion of rationale and scope and sequence; concise student learning objectives are listed.

Suggested teaching methods and strategies are provided, too, thus offering a complete structured approach for those who require it but also allowing unlimited flexibility for the experienced instructor.

With each Teacher's Guide is a set of photocopy masters of a Glossary of words used in the textbook. An important special feature is the inclusion of a general reading bibliography and a listing of important state agencies.

The Student Activity Book is a consumable, one-per-student programmed workbook designed to prepare students to accomplish the learning objectives. It is ideal for individually-paced classes, for late entries trying to catch up, and for students who miss class often. It becomes a valuable study aid when complete and is useful as a tool in teaching reading comprehension and factual note-taking.

Activities in the Student Activitiy Book supplement but do not duplicate the end-of-chapter activities in the textbook. They are designed to be used in concert with each other.

The Evaluation Manual is a series of carefully crafted chapter and unit examinations designed to standardly measure student comprehension and retention. Successful completion of the tests in the Evaluation Manual far surpasses the level of historical and socio-economic knowledge required by recent state mandate.
